Yesterday, while I was sorting things and packing for camping, Elijah took the telephone off the couch and started fiddling with it. He's done this before but never managed to actually do anything besides push all the buttons at once. With our phone you can't just dial a number and have it go though, you have to push "On" and then dial, or dial and then push "On" so it's never been a big deal to let him play with it for a minute before we take it away.
Well, in the short time that Eli played with the phone he not only dialed a number, he somehow got into the saved numbers in the phonebook on the phone, dialed Grandpa Schneider's cellphone, and put it on speakerphone! I was quite surprised to hear, "Hello? Jon?" as I'm sitting there packing a camping bag, and then quickly realized what Eli must have done. Eli thought it was pretty cool though and looked over at me with a big proud grin on his face, holding the phone out to me. What an embarrassed mommy, though, trying to explain how her 14-month old son took the phone and made a call! From now on your telephone privileges are restricted little man! And from now on we're going to have to be more careful where we put the phone!

Eli really is a little technology maven. Anything that looks like technology -- our home phones, cell phones, the computer, TV remote controls -- he just loves to play with.
The computer in particular he loves to play with. If Missy or I sit him on our lap in front of the computer, he'll play with it like he knows what he's doing: he'll bang on the keyboard for a minute, them reach out and slide the mouse around on the desk for a minute, then back to the keyboard, then the mouse again...
Maybe he'll be a programmer like Daddy someday! I started playing with programming around age 6 with the old IBM PC that my Dad brought home from work (circa 1982) -- it would boot to a BASIC programming environment if there was no diskette in the drive (as the machine had no hard drive!). I've thought a little bit about what programming environment to introduce Eli to first... but I guess I still have a few years to get that figured out! :-)
Like Jon said, Eli loves the computer. After we change his diaper in the morning we'll put him on the ground while we get dressed and, almost invariably, the first thing he does is go to the office, stand up in front of the computer, and start moving the mouse and hitting the keyboard. Guess he needs to check his e-mail first thing in the morning!
