Eli read bedtime stories to ME tonight!

We just had a great weekend visit at our house with Grandpa Bob and Grandma Sherry.  An offhand question earlier this weekend from Grandpa Bob, “is Eli reading yet?,” set me thinking.

So, tonight at bedtime, I got out some “easy-to-read” books: Dora's Picnic, My Dog Buddy, and the Dr. Seuss classic In a People House (which used to belong to me, and which Grandma Amanda gave to Eli for Christmas in 2005).

This was the first time I’ve ever tried to have Eli read to me.  I read him books at bedtime most nights these days, and I knew that Eli recognizes probably 50-100 words on sight (many of them related to video games – words like “save”, “menu”, and “Mario”!).

Still, I was a little bit surprised when Eli did really well reading these books to me!  He did recognize many words on sight, and he was able to sound out most others and/or infer them from context clues.  I did help Eli out with some longer, trickier words, such as “chocolate” and “brought” from the Dora book, but Eli di most of the reading on his own.

Missy and I are going to start doing more reading with Eli.  He’ll be all set for kindergarten this fall!
